Provisional licence and driving test guidance

Before starting driving lessons or booking a theory test, we need a valid provisional driving licence. We can apply online through the official Gov.UK site or by using a D1 form from a post office. Applications can be made up to three months before turning 16, but the licence becomes valid at 17. Requirements include meeting eyesight standards, providing identification, and sharing address history. Once issued, we must present a valid licence before beginning lessons on public roads.

 

The theory test must be passed before booking a practical driving test. It includes multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception section, both designed to assess knowledge and awareness. After passing, we can arrange the practical test once driving skills reach the required level. The test includes general driving, independent driving using a sat nav or road signs, and real-road scenarios. Checking instructor availability before booking helps ensure proper preparation and access to a suitable vehicle.
